I am definitely not a pro at this but If I were you I would try to crate him again. I would just act as if he was a puppy all over again. Crate him when you can't have all eyes on him and if he whines let him and he will eventually stop (well my brooklyn did anyway). If you can put him on a schedule to go outside and potty. I have put Brooklyn on a leash and literally tied her to me during the day while I was doing dishes or whatever. That way I knew when she had to go outside plus she never would potty in the house in front of me she would always want to go hide because she knew she wasn't suppose to be pottying in the house.
