Just keep referring to the book, and try to thread your machine exactly as it says. I agree that you should make sure you have the correct bobbin, and that it is filled properly. But also, it might not hurt to try using a new needle. I believe it says in my book, that you should replace the needle after 8 hours of sewing.
Some times when my machine is acting up, that is what the problem is. Keep trying and don't give up.
