My understanding is that a good breeder's first priority should be to better or improve the breed. They are breeding to the AKC breed standard and do testing to prevent dogs with genetic disorders. These are not stupid questions at all.
There are alot of grey areas when it comes to back yard breeders etc. Basically my personal definition of a backyard breeder is someone who has dogs that they breed to make money not taking in to consideration weather or not their dogs are going to improve upon the next generation.
A puppy mill has one purpose and that is to churn out as many puppies as possible at the lowest cost possible for the purpose of making as much money as they can, the wellbeing of the animals in puppy mills is not taken into consideration and basically these dogs only breed and suffer until they are of no more use to the selfish people that "own" them.
I hope this helps some. And I am glad that you are asking because if we don't know these answers how can we know better
