Just wanted to let everyone know about a danger to all dogs. My dog Ceasar ate some sugarfree gum. I wasn't concerned at first, but called the vet about two hours later because I wasn't sure how he would pass it. She asked me if Xylitol was on the ingredient list. I said yes. She said I needed to bring Ceasar in immediately. Apparenty Xylitol is toxic to dogs. I had NO idea. It causes sudden blood sugar drops and can cause kidney and liver failure. Luckily our Ceasar pulled through after a few days of constant care. This is a fairly new finding over the past few years. Xylitol is found in lots of sugarfree products. I had never heard of this before and have since told every pet owner I know. Most dogs that ingest this are not as lucky as Ceasar, especially little dogs. It doesn't take much.
