If the handler used something that opens the cuticle and lifts pigment at all you may be seeing the dogs underlying pigment. Is his gold on the dark side? I would ask the handler exactly what she used as some human color enhancing shampoos and conditioners will lift pigment especially on colored hair. Human products are more acidic than pet products so they can react differently on dogs than humans especially if the hair is damaged to start with.
