I use a slicker and pin brush regularly on my Pom. He usually only gets mats behind his ear and neck area, once in a great while his behind area. After spraying with detangler I use a small narrow toothed comb to ultimately get the mats out. Sometimes cutting into the mat with the side of the slicker brush helps break it up. Always mist the coat before brushing. The slicker brush gets at the undercoat. Look at Pom books or do a google search for Pom grooming. Oh btw I got my pink slicker brush at Target for under $5.
