So glad you're going to the vet, poor baby! Hard to say what it is - could be anal glands. The only thing I can think of to do, for soothing purposes - if you have any diaper cream or hydrocortisone cream, or antibiotic cream on hand - you could gently put some on the area without lifting his tail.
