One of the vet techs told me once that wrapping them in a blanket "burrito" works too. You literally wrap them like a burrito (not their head) and have someone hold them. Just leave out one leg at a time while you trim the nails.
They can't squirm as much. I've tried it once or twice and it worked. It might be worth a try.
