I fly on US Airways and use a sherpa carrier for the plane ride. Usually the max height for any of the airlines is 10" for a softside.
As soon as you make your plane reservation, be sure to call the airline to book a reservation for the baby coming back home. If you show up at the airport without a reservation for the baby and the airline has met the maximum number of pets for that flight, they will probably decline entry for the pup.
Also check to find out what the one-way price is for a carry-on pet. US Airways is $100, Delta is $50.
I've had awful experiences with Delta going in and out of North Carolina and will NEVER fly them there again! We're talking over 16 hour delay in the airport and being bussed 2 1/2 hours away to another airport only to have another flight cancelled! All of this WITH a yorkie in tow!!
Plan carefully.
