I'm here all day with both of mine so it wasn't really a problem. The first couple of times I did have to leave I put them in separate rooms.....Reno in the tile kitchen and Ruby in my bedroom with pads.
If I were to bring home a puppy and had to leave them for work, I would opt for separate crates until I knew they got along well with each other.
