From what I know from what I heard on National Geographic, they are scavengers and will eat dead carcuses. In fact, they actually are important to other animals since they will eat any dead carcuses they find, which saves other animals from eating a dead carcus which is diseased. A buzzard can actually survive anthrax.
As for if they will eat something live, I'm not sure if they would kill to eat. I'm just not willing to take any chances with my guys. Jake is really tiny, so I'm always extra careful with him.
