Hi Christy, Welcome and Congrats on both of your new bundles of joy!! I think it is great that you got them together!! I got 2 chihuahuas a few months apart, a boy and a girl, and they grew up together. I got the boy fixed at about 1 year old and the girl wasn't until 3 1/2 yrs. old. (She was so tiny and I was nervous!) Most small pups have their first heat around 6 months old, although some can have it later. You will start to see her privates swell and she will start licking them more. I used sanitary panties on her for the whole 2-3 week period. They are in fabric and you stick a piece of a human sanitary pad in there. You have to change these pads regularly during the day and make sure to clean her privates and bottom with a huggie or wet wipe so she doesn't get a rash. During that heat cycle I also as an added precaution made my male wear a belly band with a pad in it also. He was really good with her and she would growl and nip at him if he came near her!
