Actually, I personally know several breeders who have either discontinued registry with AKC or are seriously considering it. None of them have any problem with the rules, and have never had any problem with the inspections. There are more costs to the breeder than just the $20 to register a puppy. And to many, it is the principle rather than the actual fee. Moreover, as I mentioned, being AKC does not guarantee lineage or health. One of the breeders I know used to feel that AKC was a superior registry. After purchasing two AKC dogs who matured to what was without doubt a mixed breed, they now have a much more realistic view. It doesn't take much to produce an AKC puppy. Not much more than fees, anyway. Many, many "puppymills" produce AKC registered dogs.
By no means is my intention to demean AKC. I agree that they do more than the other registries. However, no registry is perfect, and all registries can be manipulated. ANY registration is only as good as the breeder behind it.
