While most of us aren't looking for show quality dogs, the AKC is the only registry that actually does kennel inspections. The other registries appeal to unsophisticated buyers who just are looking for a "registered" dog, but who have no idea what that means. A registered dog and the AKC use to be synonymous, but now that anyone can invent a registry, unethical breeders and puppymills who have been dropped from the AKC are looking for ways to make their dogs more appealing by offering alternative registries. The AKC also has records of all the dog's bloodlines going back many generations, and I'm hopeful, in the future, with DNA testing they will be useful in helping to isolate the genes carrying the heredity diseases that inflict so many purebred dogs.
