Welcome David! I registered my pup with AKC anyway. They will email you a coupon for a free vet visit with one of their vets on their list. You probably have your own vet, but perhaps your vet is on their list! It saved me $55.
I just like having the papers anyway (did for my Westie too). My kids enjoyed doing it with me (after they typed in the very royal name we chose for our Yorkie, "Trixie Coco Pop"). lol
You will find this blog very helpful with all your questions. As the previous person said, there is a great area for grooming. I have a 5 mo. old Yorkie and have just brushed her and top knots so far. Ad your puppie's hair grows the top knot is helpful, so they can see!
