I actually noticed this last summer and even a little bit her first summer (she is 3), but last year it seemed really bad. In fact, so bad I took her to a second vet for another opinion...$200 worth of lab work later...I really didnt get any answers. Even in mild heat, like 75 degrees she is panting in just a few minutes. It makes walks which she loves impossible. Even in an air conditioned house, she continues to pant for awhile after we come in. Last summer, I started dipping her in a cool bath after we came inside which seemed to help a little. As soon as it started getting cool, the panting stopped and we had no problems all winter.
Now in Cincinnati it is starting to heat up again...mid 70s last 2 days and she seems so to be so distressed. Even tonight she is tossing and turning and seems to be having more trouble than usual settling. I know though that I worry more than I should. I was out of town for 10 days this summer and my dh and family watched her and she survived just fine...and Im sure they didnt give her cool baths after walking her or anything.
Just wondered if anyone has any ideas or if Yorkies are especially sensitive to heat. We keep her hair very short and most of the day she is in a cool house. She is a little overweight....8lbs, but the vet said he would only want her to lose 1/2lb if she did lose. She is a puppy mill dog from a pet store (I didnt buy her from there) so I wonder if she could have chronic health problems. She already has luxating patella.
Does anyone have similar problems or suggestions? Thanks
