The only thing I would really add is make sure that your potty treats are good ones and go over the top with the praise. We didn't cheer and clap as much when our kids got A's on their report cards as we did when puppies pottied where they were supposed to.
And my philosophy is to make it nearly impossible to fail. Set your baby and yourself up for success! Use the advice above.
Coby is 1 year old and still doesn't have the run of the house. He has two huge rooms and two stairways - where he is 99.999% trained. We are still adding supervised visits to the remaining rooms. Our 11 year old Shih Tzu has the run of the house. BOTH boys come and TELL us when they potty on their pads - demanding their treats. See? THEY have US well trained.
