You are missing the point. The point is that by helping the poor underprivilged individual you are insuring that the abuse back home will continue. You are supporting it financially. You are the backer, the supplier, if you like analogies.

The puppy is out of danger and in a much better place just by being in a petstore. Eventually, the pet stores will not be able to keep them and will sell them at a loss and they won't continue to be replaced if we don't buy them.
