Both hubby and I work - so Bailey is left in an xpen too. I was never concerned about pottying in the xpen. If I wasn't there to correct her - then there was no sense in worrying about it. And, just as expected- she taught herself to pee on the pads and then eventually held it all day.
However, we were very dilligent about potty training in the house. We accomplished that within 2 mos.
At first I was concerned about her getting bored and I worried about leaving her all day - but I soon realized that she expected the routine, she was safe - and gladly hops in the xpen every morning - with a treat of course!!
Good luck!
