It looks like everyone said exactly what I would say. I kept my babies in an xpen with a soft bed during the day if I had to leave or get them out from being underfoot. And for the first few weeks, when they were still too young to 'hold it' they slept in it as well during the night. Not only did it allow them to potty when need be, since I kept it in the kitchen, I was able to get through the nite without losing sleep!! When they got a little bigger, I moved their crate (without the door) into the xpen area and let them get used to it. Eventually they moved upstairs with their crate and now all 6 sleep in crates in my room. I don't like them in their crates without me near. In case something happens, I am there to let them out. I use the plastic airline crates. Not the wire/metal crates. They are way to heavy to move when I have to vacuum, etc.
I attached a picture of what the area looked like. Yes it is my cat instead of a dog, but he was so cute in it!!
