Dental Health (once again) I just wanted to tell you my recent experience with a few things I've tried with my Max and his teeth and what has worked.
I'll start by saying that I had never taken him to have his teeth professionally cleaned b/c I didn't want him anesthetized for it if it wasn't absolutely necessary, and then I heard that the "no anesthesia" methods might just scrape the tartar and bacteria up into their gums and produce a terrible infection.
So, I thought about some of the other products out there...which I chose not to use b/c they're expensive and I've heard VERY mixed reviews on them. I don't mind spending the money if it's something that will WORK, but it just didn't sound all that promising.
My girlfriend told me that she'd gotten some "marrow" bones at the meat market for her Yorkie and that she LOVED them.....she brought me one to try it out for Max. I took the marrow out, b/c of his previous bout of pancreatitis and not needing the extra fat/rich junk food. He LOVED it!!! He chewed on that bone for HOURS! Anyhow, I wasn't really sure how often to give him one, so I decided every couple of days or so...b/c the other one got kind of gross and dirty for one thing.
Anyway, when he wound up with pancreatitis, the vet who was treating him was looking at his teeth and said "see here? his teeth shouldn't be this bad at his age (he was only 2 or a little less at the time). I had never brushed them, thinking his dry food and chew toys would do the job. Wrong!
So, in the recent past before I got the bones, I'd started trying to brush his teeth with a gauze piece and the paste and a brush..but it wasn't really making much of a difference after a couple of weeks.
Now, after chewing on these bones, his teeth I won't say are SPARKLING white, but I'll say that the difference is AMAZING! I'm sorry I didn't take any photos of the before and now....b/c I'm honestly telling you; it's incredible! ANd his breath is fresher too....not like minty fresh, but just normal...not like there's much of an odor at all.
The only bad thing is....there's only a couple of stores around here who have them and they are selling out fast. I called the store closest to me this afternoon to see if they had any, and he told me he had 2 pks left ...I said "save them for me, I'll be there in 10 min"....he did and when I got there, he and the other meat guy told me "it's a good thing you called, b/c right after you called a guy came in and wanted some and we had to tell him they were sold...and he was MAD", LOL. So, just TRY them if you're having any dental problems....I'd say it's been maybe 3 weeks that I've been giving them to him and the difference is really astounding. Something that keeps them occupied for awhile, they like and is good for them! Wow!
