Welcome to Yorkie Talk. My Sissy has has giardia twice, once at 9 months (very severe) and again at 18 months. The first treatment given was with the pancur powder which did nothing. She was then treated again with metronidazole in a liquid form. That seemed to do the trick.

I do know Giardia can be found in the upper or lower GI tract or both. Once they have had a case, they are very susceptible to it again. Even though it is a parasite, I believe it acts almost like a virus. It goes dormant, but can come back again. Any type of stress can bring it on. It can also be found in any standing outside water; wet grass; wood chips. Birds are the primary carriers, so it can easily be picked up if your pup walks through dried bird poop residue and licks his/her paw. Using baby wipes on the feet and underside of the body can help reduce this likelihood after your pup has been outside.

Please be very careful with your baby, as anorexia can develop as a result of the Giardia as well. After Sissy had it the first time, we began feeding yogurt (Stoneyfield Organic or Dannon Natural - lowfat vanilla) in the morning for breakfast. This really helped her tummy heal and seems to assist in keeping her healthy.

Sending healing wishes.........
