Do any of you not use a collar to avoid damaging their fur for show purposes? Or have you found a collar that is gentler than a leather one?

I ask because a friend shows her Australian shepherds and was advised by the breeder to forego a collar. But she worries that if the dog ever escapes, it will be difficult for the finder to ID her. She has a microchip, but she thinks the neighbor who finds them won't take the time to get a vet to check it out. She's considering an ear tattoo.
