With Codie, I first noticed it when he was a yeart old. He started walking on 3 legs every once in a while and hubby and I took him to the vet right away. We had the surgery within 1 month of finding out it was LP. Codie is going to be 4 years old on April 12th and about a month ago, he started doing the same thing with his other leg. So I guess it really depends on each dog individually.
