How long is he being left in the crate while you are gone? That might be contributing to the problem of peeing in the crate. Try using the washable pee-pads. They are great. I have found that Pooch-Pads are very absorbant and protect the flooring very well. They wash up great and hold their shape. Someone here also makes them (I haven't tried hers yet) but I hear that they work well too.
