It looks like she sure scammed you.
NEVER give a pet away without asking for some amount of $. Even a small amount will discourage something like this.
Also, if it ever comes up again, draw up a simple contract. Be sure it states that if the dog does not work out with them, it
MUST be returned to you.
I just hope the dog gets a good home in the end.
