I have bought a few of the belly bands. I have read on some of the sites they make them to be able to insert a maxi pad for heavier absorption. Although the ones I have aren't made like that, I was still able to put a maxi pad with it and have it work effectively. I have read though they could cause an infection if they wear the band wet for too long.
