Chewy has a cotton coat and I hate to cute mats out. I have had to at times so wht I do so it won't show is I cut 1 or 2 snips through the mat and it seems to be enough to get the mat out with out showing much or at all on their coat. I cut up and down (Toward the belly not along side it if you know what I mean)

I find that once his coat gets past a certain point he gets mats. I comb him every day (I never use a brush... only a metal comb) as long as I groom him every day and keep his hair from getting to long he doesn't mat and looks fine.
