This is a horrid, selfish situation - if you don't like sad rescue stories don't read this or you'll end up as mad as I am.
I am trying to help find a rescue for an 11 mth old Newfie in Iowa. I have already found the Newfie Club of America & several other groups. Just thought, someone on YT might no someone who rescues these dogs. There is not a rescue in Iowa for them, but I'm hoping maybe someone who fosters them lives in Iowa.
Here's the situation - it's a bit confusing. I am trying to help a friend who is not computer savvy find a rescue for an acquaintance of hers. The person who actually has the huge puppy is an older woman who has no business trying to care for a dog this big.
This lady (who I do not know) has a son who is in his 30s - he is the one who bought the dog - Sherman. The son moved from Iowa to Atlanta for a job, but supposedly couldn't take the dog right away because he didn't have a house. So he left Sherman with his mom. She apparently has overfed Sherman & he has gained way too much weight too fast & is now in pain when walking. Two vets have said he needs surgery on his hip - I'm assuming its hip dysplasia, but don't know that for a fact. The son refuses to pay for it & the mom doesn't have the money to do so, or the means to continue to care for this huge puppy that has destroyed her home since she has had him, since about Oct.
The mom even took Sherman to the vet acupuncturist I go to - he had one treatment, it did help, but the son refuses to pay for anymore treatments. He wants his mom to put Sherman to sleep

because he requires surgery

The mom is now attached to Sherman & the son has disconnected from Sherman.
The mom said that her son loves attn & the only reason he got Sherman in the 1st place was because he got lots of attn when he took Sherman anywhere. This man is a selfish SOB as far as I am concerned.
I have told my friend that they need to go back & contact the breeder & see if they would take Sherman back & I have supplied her with almost a dozen contacts for newfie rescue folks. What else can I have them do? My friend does not trust that this woman or her son will follow thru with contacting the breeder or anything else, so she is going to ask the woman if she can step in & help. My friend can't take the dog, she has a little Maltese & a son graduating hs & too many other commitments.
