I found that crating Remi from the outset was the best training all around. When my husband and I leave the house we do not make any kind of fuss or eye contact, etc., with Remi. We crate him, then put on our coats and act like there is no problem. When we return, we do not go to open his crate immediately. We wait a few minutes, busying ourselves with the mail, hanging coats, etc., and then we take him out. Again, we do not fuss or say "lovey things" to him although that is very very tempting.
This has helped us in that Remi is well adjusted to when we leave the room or leave the house. We also use the crate when he rides with us in the car.

By the way, your pup is young and when Remi was a little baby he did the same. He did not want us out of his sight. We act the same while he is in his Xpen, that is we never go back to him when he whines and whimpers. We only pick him up when he is quiet. He has learned that we will return and he is now confident about it.

If you can begin crate training it will be very beneficial and I believe your problem will be solved. Start in small increments and make his crate a place that he wants to be. A favorite toy or small treat should be in there every time he enters.

Lots of good luck! Everything will work out for you.
