When you finish baking your cake take and put it in the freezer until it is completely cold (approx 1 hour) then take the cake out of frezzer and out of pan. The structure of the cake crumb will solidify and the cake will be much easier to cut in half and you won't end up with lots of crumbling of your cake. You also should keep your frosting for the cake at room temp this will also make it easier to spread. Also a tip for icing the outside of the cake is to put cake back in freezer or fridge before you want to ice it. There is nothing worse then cake crumbs in your icing.
