I don't agree with this at all. Dogs are den animals and if properly trained don't mind a quiet enclosed area when you're away. I have 9 of them, plus puppies, and I crate them for THEIR safety. I feel most comfortable with them there, knowing that while I'm gone they'll have a safe place with a bed, food, water, and toys right there. Plus not everyone has an area of the house that isn't carpeted that they can fence off.
Many people crate their dogs upon the recommendation of experts in the field. I think it's a completely normal practice.
And none of my dogs have issues or are "neurotic" because they are crated for their safety while I'm gone...
