Take a q tip and swab his ear....not deeply. If you see a dark color on the swab, it's likely mites. Does he cry at all when scratching?
Wax in his ear may make it smell some, but it really shouldn't cause him to scratch. It could also be an ear infection.
For wax build up my vet recommends ... mixing equal parts peroxide and water...a teaspoon and put in his ear with a dropper. Massage gently...then allow him to shake his head.
