Default Question about anesthesia and pre testing.

Jo had a visit with a vet this morning to discuss his future neutering. The vet seemed nice and I let him tell me what he uses. He said they use a valium/ketocet (I think that was it) mix to intibate (using the smallest tube) and then the Isoflorane. (sp?) He also said afterwards he may have quite a bit of pain and gave me some reusable ice packs and said he would give him pain pills but I can't remember the name...I believe it started with an R though. Is there any pretesting that should be done and if so what and why? The vet didn't mention any and I forgot to ask. Jo only has 1 testicle dropped so his neuter will be a bit more involved so that's why he will be in more pain than usual...and Jo has a zero tolerance for pain so I'm almost expecting him to have a hard time. Oh, Jo only weighs 3.6 at 8 1/2 months old so he's still pretty tiny.
