We stayed in Michigan near Traverse City one year. We stayed in a little cabin right on the lake that allowed dogs for around $600 for the week. We had a canoe and a short walk away you could rent small water craft. One day we rented a pontoon boat and cruised all over. Another we drove to the big sand dune...can't remember what it's called, but it was really pretty cool. We road bikes a lot, (there was a great trail that took you right into town), and really had a wonderful time. We've kept it near the top of our list of all time favorite vacations. I'll try to figure out exactly where we stayed if you'd like.
We've also rented cottages on Tybee Island, in the summer for relatively cheap. You've got the beach and nearby Savannah. If you're taking the furkids there is even a small dog park right on Tybee.
