I'm sorry you had an end to an eight year relationship and totally understand where you're coming from....my husband died and I had to pack up and move from a 3 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom apartment. It was and still is horribly depressing but I'm adjusting little by little (I moved Feb 1st)
I chose to be on the ground floor with a patio ...I put indoor/outdoor carpet down for them which doesn't hold the rain or pee

& if they do the other.... I just pick it up and flush it - It's a huge help as far as the girl going 'outside' -
They also have pads down in my room and the living room -
but he'll need to exercise - so I'd try to walk him as often as you can - we do 2 walks per day...If you can't do walks - put pee pads down in every room and consistently put him on them telling him to do 'his business' and WHEN HE DOES - give him a treat and throw a parade
you could try a litter box too if he isn't fond of the pads - GOOD LUCK !!
