we have traveled a lot with our 2 yorkies also and most motels are pet friendly these days. even is the sign says no pets they don't mind a small one. just make sure you ask first. there are a lot of web sites that has lists of pet friendly lodging.
i have only left them in the room one time to go have breakfast in the hotel dining room. (big mistake) won't do that again. too much barking. we do the same as oscars mom does. we put the travel crates in the truck (weather permitting) while we go inside to eat.
