The knock on harnesses is that they encourage pulling, but my new obedience instructor had me clip the leash onto a ring on the harness that's at his chest, not the ring on his back. It puts no pressure on his neck, but it pulls at him a little differently than the top ring does. He's less inclined to pull when I hook it to the front.

But absolutely, no leash to the collar. I was ignorant of that for the first few obedience courses we took, and the instructors were idiots. I may have damaged his trachea in the process.
