In my experience with Ebay lots of people wait to the last few minutes to start bidding. If I see something I am interested in bidding on I never bid right away because it only shows others that someone is interested in the item. I have found that when I bid early on an auction that I NEVER win the item but if I bid in the last minutes or so I have a much better chance at winning. But like others have said, at the end of the auction it can be nerve racking because all the "snipers" come out if it is a "hot" item.
