I have two mesh playpens, one in my family room/kitchen and one in my bedroom. I hang large beach towels around the sides of the playpen to keep out drafts. This also keeps the other yorkies from spying on the new mom and her family. If it is chilly I use a dog heating pad and can put a blanket over the top of the playpen.
Every night I put the puppies in a basket and carry them upstairs, and every morning I bring them back down. We haven't had any trouble with this system. But it does double the amount of laundry.
I understand completely wanting to keep them near you. Every little sound and I peek in to see what is happening. I feel like I can keep better track of mom as well.
