We have a fireplace that we have used a lot this winter- same problem- I went to a resale shop- found an old wooden toy box- put wood in that-pick up any little pieces dropped when bring in- keep it right by the firplace- it has helped a lot!!
I think maybe it is just a chewing thing??????
