If you're looking to learn counted cross stitch then I'd recommend getting a small pattern, say 3"x3". Over here in the UK we have cross stitching magazines that come with a kit, (the aida, threads, needle and pattern) and they aren't very expensive.

I've been cross stitching for about 13 years now, since I was 12, and I really enjoy it, I find it relaxing. I think I started off with pre-printed fabric pattern that my mum got for me and once I'd got used to doing the stitches right she got me a small counted patern of a fox. Try to pick something not to complicated for your first counted pattern though.
