since you have never done it before, clipping the hook would be a good way to start. i have a feeling it will be a struggle since hes not used to it! lol. my cat tommy just laws quietly while i clip them cause ive been doing it since he was a kitten. but they have a quick also in their nails, just like dogs. its usually farther back than a dogs so start out by cliping the point off. in a week or two you should be able to clip a little more off. i keep tommy's pretty short since he likes to scratch...everything. i didnt care as much before but i also like them short so that he doesnt hurt dexter by accident. they play fight a lot and a cat claw to the eye would be awful.

when i lived with a roomate years ago who had a lab i left tommy's nails long to defend himself. one time he was giving the lab a smack accross the face and his claw got stuck in the labs lip. the lab started crying and running around the house draging the cat around by the lip! ive kept the nails short ever since.
