Wrigley is litter box trained, but she will go outside as well.
I'm sure there more people on here that have their dogs go in and outside and could probably give you better info.
I would think though since you are gone 9-5, you would have to leave pads down. I don't know if a Yorkie could hold it that long! I know Wrigley can't.
I would think if you left pads down while you are gone, but take him out when you get home and keep that routine, he will get the idea.
I love crate training, Wrigley sleeps in a crate at night and we have a regular baby playpen for when we are gone for longer periods during the day.
I would say an xpen would be a good idea during the day, I think they like smaller spaces. They tend to feel safer.
