Default Pee pad trained...now, trying to change

Ok, here's the situation. Watson is 9 months old and he does very well using the pee pads.. I can't remember the last time he had an accident off the pad. I've been doing some thinking and I want to stop using the pee pads and have him trained for outdoors. But I am lost how I should go about this. As of now he has all access to my apartment the entire day. Should I start confining him in a playpen when I am gone and crate him at night? Also I still have a pad down, but I don't think this is helping. B/c he is used to not having to hold it at all, so as soon as he has to go he does..even if it's his little "quarter size" relief. Any tips/advice on what I should do about this would be great, thanks.
