The question is are they more common in small Yorkies. The majority of Yorkies that I have heard of that have portosystemic shunts are usually small (under 5 lbs.) I know there are some bigger ones out there with portosystemic shunts but I just have not heard of that many of them. Anytime I hear of a Yorkie puppy having hypoglycemia I get concerned because sometimes that is one of the first indications that shows up in a liver shunt puppy. If I had a hypoglycemic puppy I would definitely recommend running a blood panel on that puppy just to be safe. In a perfect world people would be getting blood panels on all newly acquired puppies, whether you are a breeder or a owner but unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world. |
