Your pup is very young. I use a retractable leash attached to Remi's harness. I started this routine immediately upon bringing him home his first day.
I also encourage him by saying "hurry up", etc., and now he performs almost everytime I take him out, on command.
One mistake I made when Remi was quite young , was taking him in too quickly after he pooped. I didn't realize that he wasn't quite finished outside and he would quickly finish inside! Patience is a great virtue!
