As you now know, undertows can be really strong and you can't fight them. Many people have drowned trying.
What you have to do is
swim parallel to the shoreline until you are out of the undertow. Then you can swim back in to shore. As long as you are still in the current you will be pulled farther out. Swimming parallel will take you out of the current that is pulling you out to sea. Then you can ride the waves back in.
