A diaphragmatic hernia is where there is an opening in the diaphragm. The diaphragm seperates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. Because of the opening in the diaphragm, abdominal organs push through that hole into the thoracic cavity. The thoracic cavity is under negative pressure, but the abdominal cavity normally is not. When there is a diaphragmatic hernia, both are under negative pressure.
