I read where you could try clicking a pen, or use a lid that makes a popping sound too like on a little juice bottle. You could also put some tape over the clicker & it will muffle the sound or put in your pocket.
Novato ~ They suggest people food so the pups don't get bored with the treat. They can get bored with treats??? The book suggests hot dog pieces or cheese microwaved so it hardens up a little & they are good for a week. My one pup is lactose intolerant so forget the cheese treats.
I bought Puperoni sticks. I slice them in thirds lengthwise with a pair of scissors. Then I snip into pieces. I don't have to worry if it's too old using the Puperoni sticks. You don't want a treat too big or you will have to stop training so they eat the treat.
They also said some dogs aren't treat eaters & to use a toy then. But I don't know how you would do that without taking too long a time inbetween all the training with the clicker.
